DMOZ clean up!

After I picked one random DMOZ category, and blogged about three sites that shouldn’t be listed, it appears like some editor in charge has removed 10 of the original 26 sites listed.

These sites are gone:

It was not me who removed the sites, I am not a DMOZ editor. However I do think that the quality of the category has improved. I would encourage more editors to take a new and critical look at the sites they have listed in their categories. If 10 of of 26 sites shouldn’t be listed in this random category then the situation should be similar in other parts of the directory.

  1. I don’t think it’s so much that editors are deliberately (or even negligently) leaving such low-quality sites listed in categories. Given that there are over 500,000 categories and only around 7,000 active editors, it’s far more likely that these sites have slipped in at some point, and no-one’s happened to notice that there’s now a problem with them.

Editors take quality control issues like this very seriously and, as you have observed, action is taken pretty quickly when things are brought to their attention. The ODP welcomes anyone pointing out issues like this. The best way to do so is either to use the “Update URL” link on the dmoz.org category page, or to post the details at http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=12
