$187.500.000 to be divided among YouTube victims.

You Tube is a nightmare, don’t get me wrong I love watching funny videos; however it is a nightmare to police. I personally don’t think a web service like You Tube could coexist with current copyright laws, either the laws must change or You Tube has to change. Even if Google manages to make licence deals with every major and medium media house in the World there will always be countless other copyright holders which rights could be infringed. If I upload a funny video that I have shot myself on this website and somebody downloads it and decides to share it on You Tube, my right is violated. My ownership of intellectual property is not any less important than the rights of Time Warner. I am not even required to mark the material as copyrighted, it is so by default. Even if Google decides to screen every video uploaded they will have no way of knowing if the material is copyrighted or not, the situation is hopeless. Since they run ads on the site they are even profiting from stolen content.

So does any of this have anything to do with SEO? Yes, it does. It could very well be that law firms will start to hunt down You Tube victims. To do so they will spend large amounts of money on advertising. So start building a You Tube victim site right now. I will not be taking my own advice.
